Two lifters from Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway competed in the State Championship meet last Saturday at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene, TX. Over 250 lifters competed in the Division I (5A/6A) State Championship meet divided between 11 weight classes. Sophomore Esteban Urquieta competed in the 114 lbs weight class and placed 11th out 22 total lifter with a total of 900 lbs. Senior Jacob Rodriguez became the new 275 lbs state champion with a total of 1860 lbs. Jacob Rodriguez was also awarded the "Best Pound for Pound Squat" for his recording breaking lift of 820 lbs. The team placed 10th overall out over 90 schools in class 5A and 6A with a total of 6 points.
Nine lifters from Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway competed in the Girls State Championship meet on March 17th in Waco, Tx. Over 200 lifters competed in the class 5A State Championship meet divided between 12 weight divisions. Seniors Julie Stanford and Stephanie Urquieta along with juniors Raelene Chavez, Kailey Castillo, and Shelby Webster were just some of the lifters that qualified. Castillo placed 10th in the 114 lbs weight class, Webster placed 9th in the 123 lbs weight class, and Urquieta placed 6th in the 198 lbs weight class. Top 5 medalists included freshman Julianna Perez placing 5th in the 132 lbs weight class, junior Hope Davila placing 5th in the 114 lbs weight class, senior Jaci Cavazos placing 5th in the 165 lbs weight class, and sophomore Mia Reyes for placing 3rd in the 114 lbs weight class. The team placed 12th overall with a total of 6 points.
