Federal Programs

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) was first passed by Congress as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on Poverty. This legislation supplied federal funds to support public education, particularly in resource-poor, low income settings. ESEA was reauthorized by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB). NCLB aimed to close the achievement gap between groups of students by establishing student achievement targets and increasing LEA and campus accountability for academic achievement.

In 2015, the President signed the Every Student Succeeds Act, a reauthorization of the ESEA of 1965. ESSA replaces its predecessor, the No Child Left Behind Act (2001).
